Dog breeding tips
I have 2 dogs, a labrador and a staff. Neither of them have been done as I want them to mate first and then I'll get them done. But does anyone have any tips especially about when a dog is pregnant so that I'm not completely in the dark when it happens.I know it's best to leave the mother to it wehn the babies start being born but I would still like to know of anything I can do and what I should have to hand just in case.
Dog breeding
What is your opinion on breeding dogs? Do you have a certain breed that you like more than others? If so, what is it, and why? Are you against breeding? If so, why?Personally I would only ever adopt an animal from a shelter and am 100% against breeding animals for any purpose. I know this is not the most popular opinion, but that's how I feel. I will leave it at that. I'm not looking for an argument, just other opinions and ideas.
dog breeding
It is really disturbing me the number of people I see on mylot who want to breed their dog. Most of these people don't know what they are getting into, financially and otherwise. I just wish people would do more research and look at the number of unwanted pets that are euthanized in shelters every day because there are not enough loving homes. Not to mention breeding dogs who are below breed standard which results in problems. Some prime examples of overbreeding and the problems it creates: hip dysplasia in large breeds like labs and retrievers, blindness in jack russels, deafness in dalmations, agression in cocker spaniels, skin and urinary tract problems in english bulldogs, subluxated patellas (slipped knee caps) in small breeds like yorkies.
Define 'Puppy-Mill'
Everyone's definition of puppy mill is different. I thought it would make for an enlightening discussion here on mylot to discuss what the term 'puppy-mill' means to us. For me, personally, I think there is no such thing as a puppy mill. There are ethical breeders and there are non-ethical breeders. There are responsible breeders and irresponsible breeders. The term 'puppy-mill' was coined by animal rights extremists such as PETA and HSUS and if you do your homework, the people who coined this term, very literally mean EVERYONE who breeds dogs. It's their term for dog breeder, good or bad! They just figured that term sounded so much more profitable as, after all, they are all about pushing buttons to make money. They say that dog breeders are only in it for the money while they rake in millions upon millions of dollars and never send any of that money to support the animal shelters unless it benefits them media wise. Of course, they aren't above killing innocent animals, either. Do you believe in the word 'puppy-mill' and what does it mean to you?
Do mix breed dogs have less medical problems?
I have been having this discussion with on of my neighbours who has a pure-breed dashound and seems to have all kinds of medical problems. The 2 pure breed Shitzu's in our complex have problems too does anybody know why this happens with pure breeds?
breeding dogs: not just a hobby
my neighbor bought a chow chow last year for a pet. when it had puppies people kept coming wanting to buy her puppies. for the past year she has made thousands of pesos of her chow chow. it has given birth to 10 puppies in one year and all the puppies were quickly sold at 10 thousand pesos each which is quite cheap for a chow chow since she bought hers for 13 thousand pesos.are there anybody else out there who breeds dogs for a living? is it really a lucrative bussiness? how did you start out on your business?
Peticure (nail trimmer) Product Review
I'm sure you've seen the "Peticure" advertised on tv. The ad claims that it's the ONLY way to properly trim your pets nails so you don't hurt them. Since I do my own grooming on my dogs, I know all the tools used in grooming (I also work in a kennel that does grooming). I've seen nail grinders used on dogs thousands of times and knew what to expect, so I ordered the Peticure. It took about 2 months for it to get here, and then I had to put together some of it. There were 2 sets of instructions. One looked more like an advertisement, the other was a small white paper that looked like an instruction sheet- which I used to guide me into putting this thing together. So, it's together, and I use it on my Weimaraner first- it wasn't working right. I fooled with it for about an hour, and went back to the instruction sheet- the little white sheet that I used wasn't ALL the instructions. It just told PART of the instructions- I had to use the paper that looked like an advertisement- that had ALL the instructions. Why two sets of instructions with one set only having part of the instructions? I have no idea, but it was a major pain in the rear.Yes, the peticure does work, and it...
at what age can a german shepard
be send for mateing. Or what is the sign, that he is ready for mateing.
Would you rescue a dog from a home or go to a breeder?
Hi all, we have just been to our local dog rehoming center and have seen some of the most sorry looking animals imaginable. We are now in the process of rehoming a 5 year old crossbreed called Max, adorable but has had a very hard life. We were wondering about other peoples experiences with rescued/rehoming dogs and how you have coped bring them into your home environment. Would also like to know if you think going to a breeder and being able to choose a puppy, seeing its parents and knowing its history is a better thing to do.
