myLot Discussions| Training Large Dog to Lay Down? | | We brought a black lab into our home about a month ago. Someone had dumped him off in the country and we were offered him by the person that picked him up. He seems to be about a year old, sweet tempered, VERY skittish. Almost like he's been beat. He will run and hide from you if you come at him, even if to play. He does know the sit command and is pretty good at it.
But my question is, how do you get him to lay down? He is a huge dog and still has yet to grow into his paws. I have pulled on his collar while telling him to lay down. I have taken his feet out from under him or tried to walk them down. I have to practically lay on the poor thing to get him to lay down due to his size (and stubborness)!
Any suggestions? | |

| | | Which type of large dog would be a good pet? | | HiI need advice. What type of large dog would be a good pet. Our German Shepherd died. I like the looks of Great Danes, Mastiffs, and Saint Bernards, but also Shepherds. I would like a dog that does not shed a great lot. A dog that could be protective of our home and family. Any personal experience you guys have to share to help with this choice? | |
| | Another Awww Story: A Really Odd Couple: Large Dog Adopts a Little Lamb | | Okay another awwww story. I heard this on the news last night about a large dog, a Rottweiller to be exact named J2 in Idaho, who has adopted a week old lamb named Cinnamon, when the mother rejected it. According to the story the pair have been inseparable and the Rottweiller won't let the little lamb out of it's sight and is very protective of the lamb. You can see the video and story here
http://abcnews.go.com/search?searchtext=rottweiller%20adopts%20a%20lamb&type=You can also see another video about the story herehttp://uk.truveo.com/Lamb-loves-Rottweiler-dog/id/2867428581As the second video suggests, most large dogs would prefer to eat a nice juicy lamb rather than being a surrogate parent to it.I can't help thinking how great animals can be with one another despite such differences...wouldn't it be great is us humans were as compassionate to other humans despite out differences?
| | Large or small breeds... | | Hello.:) I am wondering if you prefer a large breed dog or a small breed...and, if you can explain it, why. (I say it that way because I am not sure I can explain my preference for large breeds...lol) I like small breeds ok and some are downright adorable, but for the most part, I feel the bigger the dog the better! My family wants to get another dog but both hubby and daughter say not another big dog- they both want a smaller one. (They both just laughed at me when I mentioned the St Bernard at the shelter...*sigh*)
So, which do you prefer...?

| | Gissi, my little Hero | | First of all Gissi is doing better, his breathing is better, he also has been up to little Mischief lol
He does tire easily but I guess that is normal, he does get the odd Breathing attack but I know how to handle them now Now to get to my little Hero
Where I live now, there is a big Field about 5 minute walk away, well 5 minutes for me lol, for someone who is able to walk and breathe properly it would be 2 minutes
Every Morning I take the little Man there, he loves it, also all the Dogs get on great
We arrived there this morning, there where some owners with their Dogs on the actual Field talking, I was to tired to walk over so stayed where I was
Gissi ran cross, they all know him, said his Hellos to all his Doggie Friends, including the Yorkie Lady he has taken a fancy to, but she would have none of Gissi's tactics
She is smaller then Gissi lol b ut she sorts him out, there where also Tom and the Puppy Greyhound and another big Dog, then Gissi trotted of his own little way
He was quite a Distance but I knew he would come back as soon as I called
I am standing there watching him, when the other Big Dog started barking at me, he was quite a distance away from me and...
| | | Do you prefer small dogs or big dogs? | | I'm pretty torn in this matter. I like big fluffy dogs because they're adorable! But I think it's hard to take care of them. I also like small dogs but not something as small as a chihuahua because I'd rather have a cat than that - small dogs like a beagle look cute:P Fluffy dogs like a well-taken-cared Siberian Husky would look handsome as well. | |
