| | myLot Discussions| Service Dog Training | | I am looking for information on how to best finish the training of my service dog, Shay. He is a 15 month old Newfie/Lab mix who I rescued from the shelter when he was 9 weeks. We have an awesome relationship and he goes where I go, to a point. I have MS and need him for balance, more than anything. He does like to bring me "presents", but these are usually limited to dirty socks and dead mice. We've been through puppy, basic, obedience and advanced obedience training classes, which is why he is so well behaved, but I am having difficulty getting him to bring me things that I NEED, like clean socks, my cane, my jacket, etc. (I have trouble bending down). Part of this is due to the fact that he wasn't allowed to touch most of those things when he was small. Any input would be greatly appreciated! | |
| | | Bishop & the new possible service dog--what to name him? | | I still miss Bishop very much, however, I know he would want me to find a new helper. Two weeks ago I was introduced to a yellow lab 5 month old puppy. He is calm, gentle, can be reved up, likes stuffed toys, squeaky toys, nyla bone, picking up the community newspaper & carrying it to the door (i did not teach him to do this), will sit (with reminder touch on the rump)& wait for the door to be opened, & is quiet. I encourage him to be quiet. When he is quiet I tell him how good he is & so he understands that this is what I want him to do. I'm sure Bishop would immediately approve him for my new friend & helper.
My biggest challenge right now is finding a name for him. Any name suggestions are welcome as well as any questions. I really like the name "Bishop", however, this name is already taken by my friend & helper who has gone to another place & job (1/17/2003 to 9/2/2007.
This just gave me an idea for an addition to content at dogllar.com; a suggestions for names page. I will add this asap.
In the future you can find info about my new fur friend at: dogllar.com; which will soon go to pre-launch. I will let you know when the site is uploaded & ready for visits. And, will on...
| | Self Service Dog Wash...Instead of a car wash, it is a dog wash. | | Ever give your dog a bath and clog your bathtub with his or her hair? Ever wish that you could wash your dog somewhere else so you would not have to clean up the mess without paying a dog groomer? Ever go to wash your dog and realize that you do not have all the supplies you need?Well, a local store has opened in Tulsa, OK. The Sloppy Dog Wash.
Here you can take your dog there to be groomed or wash him/her yourself. All supplies are there! Just bring your dog and wash/groom!Check out the website!:)
Is this something that you would use? This is the first I have ever heard of this kind of store. What are your thoughts about this store?http://www.sloppydogwash.com/index.html
| | Where to get a service dog id card? | | Hello all,
My dog is getting trained to detect my seizures and although it is not required by law I would like to carry an id card for her. A lady at one of the classes I went to had a crediat card sized card that she got online, but when i went to the web site I got an error. Her card was like a drivers liscense on the front, but said service dog and on the back it listed her purpose. Anyone familiar with where to get one of these? Thanks
| | There was a dog in the library!! | | I am absolutely terrified of dogs! I was bit by one when I was real small, so I've had this horrible fear of them ever since. I'd have to know a dog very well in order to ever get near it without fear, and even then I won't touch it or get friendly with it. This is why I own cats.Well, Saturday we went to the library to pick out some books and videos. Inside the library is this very large dog. It seems the dog belonged to the girl working there that day. She tried to keep him close, but the dog wasn't listening well. He wasn't hyper or anything, but he wanted to sniff us and check us out. I was very uneasy about it, and so were my kids, they have picked up on my fear and have become afraid of dogs themselves. I suppose this situation wouldn't matter at all if I weren't afraid of dogs, but I didn't like the fact that the dog was there. Last I knew, animals were not allowed in public places unless they were service animals, and they had to be clearly marked as such. This dog was not a service dog at all, he was just a pet.Do you know of someone who brings their pet into buildings even though they aren't allowed? Have you ever seen a pet inside a business where it... | |
| | Did you ever cry when your pet died? | | I did once with my dog Franky. But she died of a old aged. I really cried and really depress for a long time when franky died. I did really miss her. She was always with me at home. I did miss her playfulness, and sweetness. But someone gave a dog to my fiancee who really looks like my franky we name her Bobsy. And that is the only time I regain my happiness and really made my day. Franky never given us puppies. But Bobsy did we have no 3 puppies and we name them Choco, bebe, and Nippy. Have a nice day to all of you! | |
| | I want another dog but I keep trying to find a dog just like my male rott... | | Max was 11 years old in July when he had to be put down, it still breaks my heart that we couldn't afford the surgery to attempt to fix him, even if there just was a 35% chance for him to make it (and that was if he was a LOT younger). He somehow managed to twist his stomach, the vet called it the bloat. He had a long life though, longer than many rotts do. He was an AKC German Rott, he had been a breeder until this past spring when our female was killed by a van. He was a house dog 9 1/2 of his 11 years (the only time he was in the pin was when she was in heat). He was my seizure alert dog (my seizure's have been stable for 4 years now, but I still kept him with me).
He was my best friend, a playmate for my 2 year old twin girls. Even w/ his mild arthritus and advanced age they could do anything to him and he wouldn't mind. He was our protector that wouldn't harm anyone unless they touched me or the girls.
He was my bathroom buddy (he'd set outside the door). He was my best friend.
I know it's a bit soon to get another dog, and I would like to let my daughters get a little older before I take on training a new dog, especially one w/ as much energy as a rotti pup.
My problem... | |
| | Missing Bishop & new prospect in training | | I miss Bishop very, very much. My new friend, a 5m old yellow lab, is helping me by keeping me active. He at the moment has no name. We have been together for about 11 days. I hope very soon to have a name for my new friend.
Bishop would approve of my new fur friend. He is quiet, eager to learn new things, friendly with people and animals, and has a sense of adventure like I do. I am at the moment teaching him the boundries and rules of life as the new service dog for me & my situation. He is a fast eager learner.
I will be glad to have some name suggestions. I prefer a 2 sylable name & no names starting with s. Thank you for the help.

Yum Yum
Death of a Service DogThere was a rainbow in the sky today.
It had no colors, for you are breathless.
You were the color in my world:
my eyes, my legs, my heart, my joy.
Gently, sweetly, calmly, you made my pain tolerable.
You made me whole, not broken.
You transformed a wheelchair into a tool
to embrace living, instead of prison.
I still hear you purring, openly content,
as we rode in the wheelchair against the wind.
You and I were one defining life.
Softly you broke barriers everywhere.
You taught the world to listen with new eyes
and ears to the subtleties of disability.
You delighted in the public that adored you,
exclaiming, "Look, she's smiling."
Yum Yum, I do not know how to move without you:
how to cry without you.
I do not know how to walk in the world without you:
how to go on without you.
I do not know who I am without you.
Flowers are growing upside down.
The oxygen is gone.
Birds are deaf, squawking discordantly
as one service dog is laid to rest
with grateful sobs.
The sun is down. The sky is black.
Empty arms scream your name.
